By midcentury, in fact, the notion that business leaders could benefit society had become a consensus view. This book explores the curriculum theorizing of Black women, as well as their historical and contemporary contributions to the always-evolving complicated conversation that is Curriculum Studies. It serves as an opportunity to begin a dialogue of revision and reconciliation and offers a vision for the transformation of academia's relationship with black women as students, teachers, and theorizers. Taking the perennial silencing of Black women's voices in academia as its impetus, the book explains how even fields like Curriculum Studies - where scholars have worked to challenge hegemony, injustice, and silence within the larger discipline of education - have struggled to identify an intellectual tradition marked by the Black, female subjectivity. The editor Lane had utilized as the main basis for this the Arabic text printed at the press of Biilaq in the suburbs of Cairo established by the Pasha Muhammad 'Ali, but had enriched it by a copious commentary. Since the stories making up the Nights illustrate almost the whole gamut of public and settled domestic life in the Arab Middle Ages, from the opulent surroundings of Caliphs and Sultans to the humblest dwellings of petty tradesmen and bazaar artisans, Lane was able to construct on these foundations a remarkably detailed picture of society as it functioned in the urban centres of Mediaeval Islam.

Published in English in 1884, this is the posthumous third edition of an 1862 study by the German orientalist Martin Haug (1827 76). He produced this groundbreaking analysis and comparison of Sanskrit and the Avesta while professor of Sanskrit at the Government College of Poona. His time in India enabled him to make an unprecedented study of Zoroastrian texts, becoming the first to translate the seventeen Gathas into a European language, thereby helping to highlight that they were composed by Zoroaster. Edward William West (1824 1905), an engineer and self-taught orientalist, met Haug in India. Having read this work's first edition, he was inspired to study further the Pahlavi language. On his and Haug's return to Europe in 1866, they worked closely together in translating and publishing Zoroastrian texts. West's edition of Haug's Essays includes several updates, unpublished papers from Haug's collection, appendices of further translations, and a biography of the author.
